Work log

Recent work

Real jobs, written up as repair tags. I leave out names on purpose, since this is a small county and people don’t need their laptop trouble on a website. Each tag has the problem, what I did, the price, and how it ended. That includes the one I couldn’t save.

Video & audio · VHS tape, already digitized

“You could see everyone at the party, but you couldn’t make out a word anyone said.”

A family party shot on a VHS camcorder, later transferred to a video file. The sound came through badly distorted. I worked through all 43 minutes of audio.

The voices came back out.

Laptop repair · HP laptop, 2021

“Wouldn’t boot at all.”

The drive was fine. It was a storage setup HP used around 2021 that fails in a way nobody warns you about. New SSD, fresh Windows 11.

Back to the owner in three days.

$150Fall 2026

Speed-up · Dell 2-in-1, 2017

“So slow that Chrome kept crashing.”

The old spinning hard drive was the bottleneck. Swapped in an SSD, doubled the memory, clean install of Windows 11.

Same machine, feels new.

Diagnosis · iPad, 2012

“Wouldn’t come back on.”

I couldn’t save this one, and I said so. I still went through it to make sure the photos weren’t trapped inside before handing it back.

An honest answer instead of a bigger bill.

House call · Windows PC

“A mystery program kept popping up and wouldn’t uninstall.”

Tracked down the adware that came bundled with something else and removed it.

No more pop-ups.

The prices above are what these jobs cost. For how I work out a price, see pricing. You can also find me on Facebook (opens in a new tab).

If it’s plugged in and it’s making you mad, send me a message.

Tell me what’s going on in a sentence or two. I usually reply the same day with what I think is wrong and roughly what it would cost.
